JFK, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, phoned past Presidents Hoover, Eisenhower, and Truman to brief them on the situation. Do Presidents do this sort of exchange often? Or was this just a special circumstance? Please include references with answers. Thanks!

  1. I don't have any reference's because I am to lazy to look them up , but yes , Presidents do talk to former Presidents. GW talked to his father & Clinton all the time. Bush SR. talked to Nixion, Ford & Ronnie many times. They ask for advice but remember the final decission is theirs.

  2. Sure, but Carter may now be out of the loop because of his action with Hamas and the Palestinians

  3. W called his father and his fathers pals.  Clinton stayed in touch with Carter Ford and Bush.  GHW Bush kept most of Regan's people.  It's not uncommon.  I think that Obama may turn to Clinton if fences can be mended or McCain could turn to Bush Sr.  He tries to distance himself from W.

  4. They did back in the day when things were less partisan. Nowadays Bush would be damned to ring up Clinton for any advice. The White House and Office these days is about isolated power. They want to make the calls that benefit them only. Do your own homework - no references.
