As Milwaukee Brewers’ Ryan Braun’s suspension order is overturned, reactions pour in – MLB News
As the 50-game suspension of Milwaukee Brewers’ slugger Ryan Braun was overturned, Major League Baseball’s big names came forward on Friday, February 24, with different responses to the decision.
Ryan Braun found himself in discomfort and unforeseen trouble in December last year when it was revealed that his drug test had turned out to be positive. With the failure of the test, Braun was to face 50-game suspension, dealing a striking blow to the
Brewers hope to have a strong offence.
However, as the otherwise supposedly confidential report was widely reported in the print and electronic media the previous day, reactions followed. The former hitting coach Dale Sveum was one of the big names who expressed relief over the decision.
While he felt relieved, he did not go beyond that, avoiding any comment that can be controvertible.
"Am I relieved? Yeah, sure, I'm relieved. To tell you the truth, I'm not going to elaborate on it anymore than that because it's obviously a very touchy situation right now with MLB. To tell you the truth, I think I'm going to stay away from that question
right now."
But there were comments that will invite debate in the days to come. There were suggestions that implied a kind of difference of opinion on the decision. Matt Thornton, one of the relievers of the Chicago Cubs, had his view to present on the matter.
"The drug testing has gotten very strict and very tough and it has been run well," said Thornton. "If you cheat, you get caught. Especially with HGH testing, there's really no question anymore. It's one of those things that kind of puts a bad mark on the
drug testing in a way.”
It was Cincinnati Reds’ manager Dusty Baker who while welcoming the decision, wondered how it will impact the clubs in the Division given the characteristic hitting of Ryan Braun.
Whatever the nature of the debate, from agreement to dissent, the decision is undeniably a welcoming and refreshing one for the Brewers as it will enable the team to gain strength through the presence of this accomplished slugger.
