As a Chrisitan do you really believe holidays like Easter and Christmas belong to you?

You know they have to do with the Equinoxes right? They are pagan celbrations that were around long before the time of Christ right? Why do you think that they are Christian, any logical explination?

  1. Actually no.  Easter is named for a Goddess and I think that the date is off a bit from the actual Resurrection.  Christmas misses the mark by a mile as I believe from the Bible narrative that Jesus was born in the spring probably early April.

The early Christians had no understanding of the Jewish calendar so the date for Easter is questionable.  As far as Christmas (Christ Mass) is concerned it was decided to hold that in December to draw the pagans away from the solstice into the Christian remembrances.

  2. Well, we attach certain meaning to them. So, the way we celebrate Christmas (as the birthday of Jesus Christ) IS ours...no one else thinks of it that way. But, no, we don't see the ENTIRE thing as ours.

Really, we don't know exact dates. My guess is that the actual events happened CLOSE to the modern dates of Christmas, Easter, etc. As you pointed out, they are both related to Equinoxes and were special before Christ walked this earth. So, my theory is that the early Christians used those dates to remember the important events (Christ's birth, His Resurrection, etc.) because they were close to the actual dates of occurrence and were already used to celebrate something. (It's less work to add on to an existing holiday than it is to create a whole new one.)

  3. Pagans may have created the tradition but the simple fact remains: they are significant dates concerning the birth and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Protestants adopted these dates and made them into holidays similar to the Pagan traditions. No Christian believes that the holidays "belong" to them, but as time has passed advertising for the holiday has slightly veered it from reality.
