Question:

As a Christian home school mom, I'd like to have a book sale...?

I would like to have a gigantic book sale with all the books donated. They would be mostly Christian in nature and not necessarily confined to just home school books. All of the proceeds would go to a local homeless shelter. However, I know that there would most like be plenty of books left over.

What are some ideas for things I could do with them?

  1. If you have a church, or storefront or home that is willing and able to allow for storage and access to homeschooling resources, you may wish to consider setting up a lending resource center.

Parents turn in their used books and old microscopes, etc. and other parents can use them on site, borrow them for a unit study, etc.  Someone or a group of "someones" need to be responsible for accepting donations, logging them in some way and tracking them, also for disposal of duplicates.  One way is to put items to be disposed of into a special area and offer them for free to the people using the site.

  2. Donate them to your area children's home.

Donate them to a school with a low budget. (There's a school in eastern KY that has a library and no books.  The budget wouldn't allow for books to be purchased.?

Donate them to a Christian school.

Find a child on the angel tree at Christmas who has requested books and give them some of yours.

  3. You could swap them on PaperbackSwap.com:

    I LOVE the site!!!!

  4. Well there is always listing them on eBay either as bulk or individually.  Other auction sites that are soley for homeschoolers include:

    http://www.homeschoolauctions.com/

    http://homeschoolbuy.com/

    and there is:

There are some really good articles about this subject at:

  5. Find a local homeless shelter, or a shelter for kids taken from their parents. The proceeds would definitely be nice, but if they could use the books as well....it's two benefits. A lot of kids who are homeless miss out on school because of moving around (or politics on the part of school districts in which the shelter exists)

As for shelters for youth, we have one in our city that always needs books, clothes, craft supplies. Please call DHS In your area and see if they have contact numbers for you.

  6. Donating to a church sounds great, but what about Goodwill or another thrift store.  I love when people donate schooling books to Goodwill!  I just bought 25 resource and text books there yesterday!  Not to mention you'll be helping fund jobs and making another donation on top of the homeless shelter.

  7. You could also freecycle them.

  8. Donate the books to your local library or hospital. You could also donate them to a thrift store or used book store. Another thing to try is selling them on Ebay, Half.com, or Amazon.com and then donate the rest of the money from those sales to the homeless shelter.

  9. Why not start up a library at your community church.  People could bring in books to exchange and keep on the shelves and then bring them back on the honor system.  Also, you could send boxes to "operation christmas child", or anysoldier.com in a shoebox go send to others for the holdiay.  The first goes to needy children around the world, and I'm sure there soldiers fighting for our country would love to have a book to read along with other supplies like toothpaste, deodrant, magazines, and other stuff.  You could spread the word of the gospel through your kind actions this way as well as the messages presented in the books.
