I wan't you guys opinion on what clubs should I keep in my bag. As of now I have:

Driver 10*

3 wood 15*

5 wood 19*

7 wood 24*

3 hybrid

4 iron - 9 iron

PW

SW 56*

Putter

I was thinking of replacing the 4 & 5 iron with 4 & 5 hybrids. Any suggestions. Also for those who also have a 7 wood, what clubs do you feel it replaces?

  1. A 7 wood replaces a 3 iron.  Your 3 hybrid has more loft than the 7 wood.  If you have difficulty hitting your 4 and 5 iron then it's a good idea to replace them with hybrids.  I have a similar make up in my bag except I have a strong 3 wood which is 13* and a 1 hybrid which is 16*.  I interchange wedges and hybrids depending on where I play.  The 16 will come out and the 53* wedge will go in.  I

  2. Loose the 7 wood, its useless, add a 2 or 4 hybrid (depends on where you feel there is a gap).

I would also go with a second putter, for when you fling the first putter in the water after missing a bug put :)

  3. I am old school when it comes to clubs.  I have used the same clubs for three years, with the addition of hybrids(I got rid of the 3 and 4 iron).  The clubs you have now sound great for a new golfer.  At some point I would suggest a 60 degree wedge.  They are great out of the rough and for flop shots.  Maybe lose the 7 wood when adding this.  The 7 wood is not much different than your hybrid and if you don't give up a club your bag would be against regulations.  Good golfing

  4. JNews has it right. There is no need for 3 woods and a hybrid in my opinion. I would lose at least one of those for another wedge (60 degree to start). Your 3 hybrid should be pretty comparable to your 7 wood, so I wouldn't carry both.

  5. There is absolutley nothing wrong with putting in as many hybrids in your bag as possible.  If you find that the hybrid equivalent to you 4 or 5 iron will help you hit the ball more acurately from those distances, then by all means, make the switch.  What I might suggest to you that wasn't mentioned in your question is something that I use.  Replace one or two of your long irons/hybrids and put in a couple more wedges.  I carry 4 different lofts of wedges: 48* PW, 52* GW, 56* SW, and 60* LW.  Your wedges and putter are your scoring clubs, not long irons or their hybrid counterparts.  Really consider going for extra wedges, it's cheaper cost wise and will save you more shots in the long run.

  6. I "used" to carry a 7-wood, and replaced it with a hybrid which I find much more useful.  I now carry a driver, 3-wood, hybrid, 4-SW (54 degrees) irons, 56 and 60 degree wedges.

Your current makeup is fine.  More than anything...work on your short game (50 yards and in).

  7. learn to hit irons. it'll pay off in the long term.

  8. Okay, here is what i would do in your situation.  If you have a home course, take all of your clubs out for a while and hit the ones that you feel most comfortable with.  I am a 10 handicapper and only carry 2 wedges, so you should definately only carry one wedge until you perfect it, then get into the other lofts. My suggestion would probably be a

    Driver

    3 wood

    3 hybrid

    4 hybrid

    5 hybrid

    5 iron - PW

    SW

    Putter

Good luck, golf is really a great game!
