As a UK citizen can I work as a taxi driver in France? what is involved in doing this?

You have to pass a driving test and a geography test, you have to learn the map of the city and area. You also have to get a car and get the hardest part of all, a license to work as a taxi. The number of licenses is fixed and in some cities are hugely expensive (Paris for example). They are given free by the city hall but after that the taxi drivers sell them when they retire and the price is now so high it takes some ten years to pay it off.
