Question:

As a design student starting in September, which operating system best accommodates the software I will need?

The laptop I will have for university comes without an OS, and my desktop currently runs Xp and Fedora. I am very aware of the tendencies toward Leopard in the design trade and although unfamiliar with it, I imagine I could pick it up pretty easily; having had a rough time to start with with Fedora.

Bear in mind I will happily partition.

Any advice will be appreciated!

  1. Almost all design work done is done on a Mac.

The design industry is really Mac-centric

  2. Well, I assume you'll be using photoshop, and Illy/Corel draw?

Windows should run those fine. Despite what you hear, macs aren't better at graphics. That was true 10 years ago, but now, it's equal.

Do you have gimp and inkscape on fedora? Most pro designers use those, then just clean up in illy/corel
