  1. I dont think so by law.  I understand the only way a parent can give up their rights to a child is if they are adopted or are an amansipated minor or 18 years old.

  3. Lord, the number of people who ask this question every day.  Geez people--stop creating children if you aren’t prepared to be a parent and face/fight whatever obstacles there are.

    To answer your question…

A parent can’t just give up/sign over their parental rights. Termination of parental rights has to be approved by a judge, and generally speaking they will not allow it unless it's for the purpose of adoption.  There are several reasons for this, but the main one is that courts do not feel it is the best interest of a child to leave them fatherless (unless that father is a convicted child rapist/child murderer/something to that effect), nor is it in the child’s best  interest to deny him/her the RIGHT to receive financial support from both parents (not to mention that that burden then—normally—falls on the taxpayers, who don’t want to support YOUR kids).

However, he can give up custodial and/or visitation rights (which is a different thing than parental rights), but he’ll *still have to pay child support*.  In my personal opinion, turning your back on your own flesh and blood (ie refusing to be a part of their life) makes you a class A jerk, but sadly there are plenty of jerks out there who have done it.

In short, unless someone wants to adopt the child (and Mom is in agreement with the adoption), he’ll have to financially support him/her.
