Question:

As a lot of you are parents, can I ask you?

How would you feel if your child's school report contained several spelling and grammar errors (from more than one teacher) and one teacher had referred to them by the wrong name (your surname which also happens to be a first name)?

I asked this in education earlier but wondered how other people would react.

What would you do about it?

  1. Go into see the head mistress/master as say 'oi!' - perhaps be a little more subtle than that but I would certainly point out the errors - I'd also ask if the teacher who got your child's name wrong had also given him/her the wrong report. I would certainly look into it although you don't have to go at it like a bull in a china shop.

  2. how can the teachers be correcting your childs work when they are making errors in their own writing! as others have said, you should highlight them and bring it up with the head of the school!

  3. I would be surprised and probably broach the subject when given the chance. I wouldn't be very happy about it  but as long as my child's education wasn't suffering, I wouldn't make too much fuss. Sadly, I think the general standard of English has declined rapidly and not to make excuses for the teachers but I do accept that they are under a lot of pressure. That said it's not a very good impression to say the least.

  4. GRAMMATICALLY AWARE RED PEN ARMED AVENGERS UNITE!!!!

i would circle the mistakes. i would get my child's tests/homework. i would go to the head of the school.

i would ask why Bobby got points off for spelling a word incorrectly when Ms. Teacher can spell things any way she feels....i would also ask why Bobby is being called Billy , etc etc.

this all should b brought to the head of the school's attention

  5. I would make a copy of it, correct it with a red pen, and send it; along with a letter of complaint to the school board as well as the superintendents office. I would also demand in the letter that some action be taken, and to be informed what it is they plan to do about it.

    This is completely unacceptable.

I may start to concider home schooling.

  6. I would see the head teacher about this.  Its not acceptable.

  7. Unacceptable!

If there's anybody who has absolutely no business making such errors, it's a teacher.

They are the ones who have to know that stuff inside and out.

I would report to an official outside the school district.

Someone at the city or state level to ensure a proper investigation of hiring practices and standards.

  8. Why not phone OFSTED and ask them what you should do - after all it is they  who perport to ensure our schools are as good as they can possibly be!

  9. As a teacher myself, I think you have a valid complaint. How will your children learn proper grammar?

If you want to do something about this, be sure to approach in a nonconfrontational way....it will get much better results. You have the right to demand teachers that are qualified.

As far as the wrong name, I would check to see that they had not mistaken your child for someone else. If not, then forgive them for the error....I have 150 students a year, and sometimes we slip when calling them by name....we all do this from time to time.

But do respond to the school, and who knows...maybe others will also....you could start changes in the school!!

  10. I would approach the school and point out the errors.Ask them how they intend to teach my child/children if they, themselves, aren't up to standard

  11. I would deffinately point it out to the teachers in question.

  12. Ours did.

    What did i do?

I circled the errors and sent it back.

  13. I would be up at the school asking to see the head!  I would be in touch with the local education authority.  I would contact as many right wing rags as possible.

I don't know if would do any good but I surely would have a go!

  14. I am from the old school (pun intended).  I would point it out to the Principal or Superintendent.  I would also ask that it be corrected as these reports become a part of your child's permanent record.

  15. Get your child out of public school!!

  16. I would be very unimpressed and would wonder about the quality of the teachers at the school and also their commitment to my child.

I might speak to the head at a parent's evening.

  17. I would be appalled too. I would get your red pen out, make note of the errors, and then schedule a conference with the principal. You have a right to know what the standards are in hiring teachers to educate your child.

  18. I would definitely bring it to the attention of the head. It hardly inspires confidence in the school.

  19. send it back for correction to the relevant dimwits.

  20. Horrified!  as they say " you can't get the staff these days" some of them need to put the spell check on lol

Would point it out to them!

  21. I would be appalled and want the school investigated immediately!!

    Has this happened to you?

EDIT - Sorry to hear it.  Pirate Girl really does kick butt and her suggestion to take copies and send it to various authorities is very good.

LOL at the thumbs down I'm getting here !!

EDIT - shame Pirate Girl can't spell though ;o)

  22. I would complain to the head teacher.

    It's not acceptable at all.

I would let one mistake go, but 4 isn't on.  Surely the head and/or deputy should be reading and signing off each report- the headteacher at our primary school checks them all!

  23. LOL I was extremely naughty one year and actually returned in with the errors highlighted in red ink!!!

  24. highlight all mistakes

scrawl see me in red Biro through all report, pressing hard enough to go through paper in at least two places

transfer the kids to another school

(i used to skive off a lot, on one of my reports the teacher wrote''who is this child, never been to one of my classes'')
