Question:

As a parent, do you worry about the effects of globalization?

I responded to a question regarding when one should buy an iPod for their child (of 8). Unlike many other parents, I replied that I would not buy an iPod for my child because I am worried about the effects of globalization such as poor pay and access to health care for workers in the third world (where many electronics are produced) and corporations basically becoming wealthier by treating their workers like slaves.

My opinion was not highly regarded amongst the other parents. So my question is do you, as a parent, worry about the effects of globalization? And if you do, how worried would you say that you are? Has it prevented you in purchasing a product for your family?

Thanks!

  1. if you think about alot of stuff is made in other countys

    i have an ipod.'

    cell phone

    and camara all from china

    so what =)

  2. Absolutely, and it does effect what we buy.  The majority of parents these days seem all to clueless about what is really going on and how we have a direct impact on it.

I about killed my mom when she showed me her 10th set of diamond f****** earrings!

  3. I think you are one in a million, most people could care less about how anything is produced as long as it can be consumed or purchased.  You bear a hugh responsibility of how you raise your children.  We have to raise our children in a global world these days, not a national world or ecomony.  If you don't raise your childs awarness, no one else will.  You have to plant the seeds of examination in your children.  Children should not be raised as blind consumers.  Good Job you have my VOTE!!!!!

  4. I'm concerned about it, and it is real. It isn't the reason I won't purchase cell phones, ipods, and other things of that nature. The reason I don't purchase those, are because they are a sensless waste of time and money. Along with the health side effects, which people also ignore. Almost everywhere you look people have cell phones...why? They forgot how to use a payphone, or a land line, I highly doubt it.  Materialism is spreading like a plague. I'd rather stack my assests, as the majority of people loose theirs to personal purchase addiction. Simple as that. We have one very economic vehicle, one tv, one radio, one phone. We just got cable/internet just a few days over 5 months ago. We are cancelling both effective July 27th...again both are an utter waste of time/life, and resources. I didn't ever really consider my views as being globaly concerned...however I suppose it is in a way. I just don't like blowing the finances for wasteful things. I'd rather donate my 109 a month for cable/internet to my local Fire Dept. or toward paying my house off sooner than the 8 years we have currently left(bought it on a 30 yr loan 2 years ago next month). I'm a financially savy person, thats my reasoning.

So even though our reasons are different, our actions are similar. I'm just extreme with them lol.

  5. Sure I think about globalization... but the reason why I wouldn't buy my child an ipod or a cell phone is because... they are a CHILD... they don't need it.

  6. Yes, there are certain countries where I will not buy toys at under any circumstances.  China is the primary place.

As far as where things are bought, it is very hard to find items which are not made in China...even at your favorite store...Walmart is not the only place that caters to China.
