  1. Do absolutely nothing different.  Bringing more weapons onto school grounds is inviting more disaster.  Schools, even though they are gun free zones ripe for pickings, are safer than your own place of employment and you're likley allowed to carry a concealed weapon there.  Seriously...there are far far far more workplace shootings than there are school shootings.   do you feel safer now?

  2. Bring Christianity back into the schools, religious education class etc

  3. Whoooooaaaaaa!

I am not saying we have no gun crime or knife crime in the UK we do - too much.  In schools some innercity schools have had problems with knife crimes including the case of Stephen Lawrence a Head Teacher (Principal) who was killed protecting a student from a knife wielding youth.  There was also a case of a mad man attacking a nursery (kindergarten) teacher and children with a machete.

However, as far as guns go they are generally illegal anyway.  It is possible to have a gun which must be registered and for certain use i.e. hunting and sport and kept under stringent conditions.  It is only criminals and armed police who walk the street with guns.  Most teenagers would not be able to get a gun - those who can do not seem to be in school (sweeping statement but true) and have already dropped out for illegal activities.

Knives are being discouraged strongly with education and talk of metal detectors in innercity schools who may need it.  The youths are being educated that carrying a knife for protection is more likely to be used against them and be used in a serious or lethal way.  I am sure a problem with guns in school would be the same.  I find it so hard to believe that people can walk around with guns in their bag, it is such a scary thought and one that tourists to the USA are warned about.  It only takes someone unstable, who can't control their temper to have access to a gun and devastation occurs.

  4. I would invited Challenge Day to come to my school!

  5. Make the school a non-Gun Free zone.

Seriously, have you noticed that all of the mass shootings have happened in Gun Free zones? Shortly before the Virginia Tech massacre another college had an attempted school shooting...but the gunman was stopped by a student with his legally licensed gun (sorry, I don't remember the name of the school...if I do remember, I'll edit it in).

But, I would also try to calm down. A school is still a very safe place, statistically much safer than the other places children and young adults go (even if you consider other sources of violence in schools). These shootings are big news, but are not common occurrences. Keeping perspective is important if you want to deal with problems in an effective manner.

  6. I can list a number of people who have taken it upon themselves to apply for appropriate gun licensing, should an "unlicensed" gun operator make trouble.  It could get nasty...or it might be easily "taken care of"  in the future.

I vote for the reversal of the gun-free zone.  Good idea!

  7. I have to echo the first poster-- I think schools being a gun-free zone leaves people there sitting ducks for every madman. At least guards on campuses should be armed.
