Question:

As a setter, how do you set 1s and shoots?

I play setter and I'm working on setting 1s. But usually the set is too slow and when I try to set it faster, it just goes higher and the hitter can't hit it. Any tips for setting 1s?

  1. 1's dont use ur legs just snap ur wrists and dont even push that hard

  2. The reason your set was higher is that your hitter was not in the right spot.

Setting 1's is easy when your MH jumps before you touch the ball, as you can simply "shoot at the shooter" by sending the ball to the swinging hand.

Those slower "timing" sets should be called 2's.

  3. i'm a setter with a 6 ft something middle. I jump and meet the ball in the air, then simply push your fingers a little bit and aim for the hitters hitting hand. Half of the whole thing is on the middle too. so it takes a while to get it perfect. shoots, if i'm thinking of the right thing... i jump and meet the ball then push it just above the net to between the middle and outside. as long as it's in the right spot the middle can get it.

  4. if you want to set it faster your have to make sure your hitters are approaching the same speed you want to set

also practice makes perfect, always communicate with ur hitters about how u want them to aproach and let them tell you weather you are setting to low, high or w/e

  5. Ones just set straight up. REAlly High, shoots, just use your legs & superman it far!

  6. Setting 1's is all about the timing of the hitter.  Your motion/rhythm should always remain the same so the hitter can get timing based on pass and not have to think about your speed changing.  It's up to them to basically take the ball right off your hands.  If you are working on shoots, they again adjust timing based on pass to you.  Your job then is to find their hands and "shoot" it directly at them.  That takes a lot more practice to get used to each other with the timing and ball control.

  7. i set lots of those, because we have some tall hitters. instead of setting it straight up, aim for a little lower than what you want.  bring your thumbs together a little bit more, and keep them tight.  when the bump comes just let it bounce off, with a little bit of a push.  for me, this works really well, with no double hit, but you might want to be careful of that.  good luck!

  8. every hitter is different, work with your hitters as individuals and not a 1 as a standard set. every hitter requires different heights and speed of set. When I played I was short so compensated with quickness. I'd get up and have the setter shoot the ball about 2-3 feet above the tape to my left hand which was in the air giving him a target. all he had to do was find my left hand and i could hit the ball.

in regards to a shoot or hut set, thats a matter of looking at the antenna finding the spot where your hitters hand would make contact. pull the ball of the net to where they jump...

example... 3rd red line on the antenna, 2 feet of the net****

now that you have a target practice getting the ball there 5/10 times, then 7/10 then 9/10 until you can do it 99/100

*NOTE: if you don't have an antenna and net at home which is unlikely, grab tape, mark a box on a wall about 20 feet from you, 2 feet to your left and around 8-8.5 feet high and set into the box
