As a society, do you feel we are doing a good job at measuring things?

This can be taken a number of ways....

Mixing metaphors, are we using the proper yardsticks or missing the boat? Obsessed? Lackadaisical?etc.

On a quantitative level yes.  Measurements are based on comparisons to other objects.  On a qualitative level measurements will never be perfect.

No not at al first of all we should measure ourselves.

instead of being able to read with incredible accuracy the minutiae of what is happening;on the stock market, we should have sections of the paper devoted to how individual politicians are performing in their respective portfolios. it shouldn't be hard to gather information on e.g. public health or the environment on a daily basis and publish it.
