Question:

As a teen you used speed, as an adult you suspect you had ADD and were self medicating. How to get help now?

All of the ADD medications warn that people who used drugs should not use them. But, many young people use illegal drugs because they have a deficiency somewhere in their lives. How then do you approach a problem like this? Should a person (ok it's me) just ignore the problem because of the warning labels? It's been over 15 years since I used an illegal drug. But I do think I still have ADD issues. I have a lot to lose by becoming a script addict, but I really want to try this and see if it will help me. Does anyone understand what I mean or have had this experience?

  1. Yes, I completely understand. And from the research I have done, ADD meds are what we need.  What I don't understand is the Doctor's rationale.   okay there is a medication which will help you manage your life - but, we can't give it to you because you've abused drugs in the past.

What about that doesn't make any sense.  They are worried about us becoming "addicted" to "medication" - yet, if we don't have the medication - we continue to have drug seeking behavior...thus at a greater risk of harming yourself. So, damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Moreover, it is illegal for an MD to prescribe ADD meds to recovering addicts.  AGAINST THE LAW - What?  no wonder they had mental institutions - cuz they kept everyone crazy.

I bet if a study were conducted - controlled study - of former meth users and the affects of ADD meds - there would be positive results.  Ooh, maybe one has already been done.  I'm gonna go check it out.

    Hope this helps.

  2. Maybe you should go to the doctor so you are not self medicating. You can also speak to them about your past drug abuse. Talking with a million strangers on the internet will not help your problem, you need to seek professional help.

  3. Geez,  be nice Starry.  It's just a question.

I've never had this problem.  You should probably go ahead and tell your physician.  That way if you develop a problem he/she will be aware.  It is possible you were self medicating.  In the 1980's ADHD wasn't recognized so you probably didn't know what to do.

Good luck to you.  Sounds like you are on the right track.
