Question:

As an American, how would I move to England?

I like England better than my country, and eventually want to live and work in England. If I was a citizen and had a college degree, would I still be able to get as good of a job with an advanced degree as I would in the US? Also, how exactly would I become a citizen? I plan on marrying an English woman anyway, does that make it faster? And would I be able to hold dual citizenship in case I wanted to go back to the States?

  1. I'm American, and I've been to England. My boyfriend is English, and we're going back there in about a week. You'll have to get either a student visa, to go to school over there, or get a work Visa, after your finish formal schooling (such as college) over here.

Since you haven't met your english dream woman yet, then make sure you have your priorities straight, and go there on a work or student visa at least.

And remember, the cost of living is double over there compared to here, take it from me.

    Good luck =)

  2. Just get on a boat and come over, as soon as you get off head to the local council offices and they will give you a house and everything you need :D

    see you soon :D

  3. Well, you seem to have this all mapped out. And you have been in every nook and cranny of the USA to make such a broad generalization?

You should bring at least $20,000 as a safety net while you follow your dreams.

  4. 1. by car in the winter via Bering street

    2. by plane

    3. by boat

    4. via submarine?

    5. Goodyear Blimp

And like the first answer, they will give you at arrival everything you need to be an instant success

Just the language problem - that could be an issue

  5. I think you would be better to move to Scotland. You would only need dual citizenship if you decided to become a British citizen.  Are you planning on marrying a specific Englishwoman, or are you intending to pick one up when you get here? You will still be an American citizen whatever happens.

  6. Enough already, with the moving to England  questions.  Get a job, a passport, buy a plane ticket, and gooooooooooo.

  7. I hope you don't plan to  marry this English woman just to be able to move, that would be illegal.

Since you are still 16 I suspect you still have to  meet your future spouse and if you are living in the UK you might well marry an English woman but there are other options there.

Once you have a visa to go to the UK to work you apply for leave to remain. With that you get granted a national insurance number (like social security here in the US) and you can then work. It doesn't take too long. When you become a citizen you are technically supposed to give up your American citizenship but nobody will care if you keep it. If you keep your US citizenship you must file taxes with the US govt even if you live and work in another country. You will have to pay US taxes on any earnings over $80 000 (the most recent figure I remember) as America taxes it's citizens wherever they are.

If you don't file tax returns every year you could have major problems with the IRS when you go back to the States, even if you only go for a short visit.

    Good Luck

  8. Once you've had a taste of us Brits you won't be needing to go back- you have seen The Wicker Man haven't you Jack?

You'll stand out as an American in England which means provided you have done alot with your time, got a degree, had good jobs, into lots of sports and leisure activities- this means you'll be likely to be called for interviews, they'll remember you etc- if you're a smart articulate guy you'll find a good job no problem- pretty much the same as in the US.

If you marry an Englishwoman you'll become a citizen- but I think you have to be in the EU for that- you would still have to apply for a visa and see if you get stay etc- then finally citizenship- but hey if they let in all these Eastern Europeans then why not you?

Yummy Mummy- love that answer- he he ;-)
