Question:

As an American will I be able to work (my wife will have the work permit) when we move to Dublin?

I have a technical writing background (Dublin companies frequently advertise for this qualification), but am more interested in the realities of finding any work once in Dublin. I have read of the difficulties American spouses have finding work after they have arrived in Ireland. We do not want to pass on this opportunity (my wife's job offer), but are a bit worried as Dublin's cost of living seems so high.

  1. We currently have vacancies in Ballydung Manor for a scullery maid and butler. We won't be bothered will all that work permit malarkey.

If you're interested you get board and lodgings and 50 euro a week, no questions asked. How's that for ya?

  2. You need to sort a job out before you go so that the work permit is already in place when you get there.

Put your details on www.recruitireland.ie or similar, and you should have some luck.

  3. Hi Garth, I'm not sure of the technicalities of being allowed to work - the other two replies have given sites to help you there. As to the practicalities of gaining work once you have the permit thing sorted, there is an economic downturn at the moment so you may find it difficult to secure fulltime employment. Having said that, the IT industry is still going strong, although again, you may find it hard to get a fulltime position. If you register with a specialist HR/temping agency, you should be able to access temporary contracts without too much difficulty. Technical writers are always in demand, and if you do a good job you may be able to get fulltime work through your new contacts.

The sites below frequently advertise for technical writers - if you do manage to secure a permit and fulltime job, you can expect to earn about the same as your wife.

    Good luck!
