  1. It is not really safe for anyone american or otherwise...

Venezuela is a very violent country...

  2. Ecuador is hardly safer than Venezuela.  Being an American will not lead to anything unsafe in any Latin American country, having money and being an easy target may.  If you stay in a good hotel like the Tamanaco and stay in nice areas like Altamira and Las Mercedes, nothing will happen.  Just take taxis that you phone, and you should be fine.

  3. As an American, it is not safe for you to go anywhere.

  4. Hi, I'm from Venezuela, and currently living in Spain. Caracas is a huge city, there are dangerous places and nice places. I used to work for a transnational company so I know a lot of foreign people living in Venezuela (mostly Europeans). I am sure people in Venezuela wouldn't distinguish between an American and a Norwegian. If you decide to travel to Caracas I really recommend you to visit the following:

    1. Juan Sebastian Bar: there is not a bar in the world like this one! there are always live performances of jazz and salsa.

    2. El Ávila: if you like doing some exercises (but do it in the morning)

    3. Galipan: a great view of the city... and remember to eat "sandwiches de pernil"

If you want to visit other places in Venezuela the best one is "Los Roques"... I tell you my friend, you would not regret it. Check out this web page: www.los-roques.com

  5. I was in Caracas a few years ago, without any problems.  However, at this point the situation has changed somewhat.  Hugo Chavez, Venezuela's president, is quite hostile to the U.S., and no doubt many of his people will follow his lead.  Plus, due to our current administration, anti-US sentiments are high across the world and particularly in South America.  Finally, Chavez's actions have recently caused revolts and riots among his own people, and the violence has made many areas unsafe.  You might be okay, but if it's possible I'd say wait on going to Caracas for a while and see how the situation goes.  Or consider a safer place like Ecuador or Peru.
