As an educator when should I begin to become concerned when a youngster exhibits behavior characteristic of anxiety?

  1. When the parents don't know and you inform them of your concerns, or when the parents come to you with the concern.


  2. Immediately. I would try to connect the child with a counselor and mention this concern to the parents who may be unaware of it.

I'd say you are already concerned or you wouldn't be asking for advise.  As the parents of 3 kids I would like to think that I know my children, but with my oldest being 12 I know that there are times when she cannot or will not talk to me about things that are going on with her.  If she was feeling some kind of anxiety I would HOPE that one of her teachers would pay attention enough to notice and talk to her about it.  It could be something as simple as asking her how she is doing.  I think the key is to open the lines of communication and if anything is bothering the student, perhaps she will look at you as someone she can trust and confide in you what ever is bothering her and you can decide from there what if anything you can do or should do.

  4. When you do.  Sounds cold, but the fact you asked the question means you are a conerned educator.
