  1. Depends where your going and for how long. In terms of Tax purposes, if you go work in another country for 6 months or more, you will be considered a resident alien of that country. As a result, it would be advisable to break any ties such as bank accounts and property that you have in Canada so you can be considered a non-resident of Canada and not have to file 2 tax returns every year.

Basically the year that you leave you have to file one last tax return in Canada as well as a few forms basically waving your residency in Canada by declaring that you do not have any ties to Canada and that your new country is now taxing you on your worldwide income. After that, you do not have to file another tax return in Canada, because you are now a resident of that country. If you go to the Revenue Canada website you can find the appropriate forms and paperwork. They also have a 1-800 # on there that you can call if you need help.

Keep in mind that this is just residency for tax purposes. You will still be a Canadian citizen, and thus you still have the right to go back to Canada and become a resident any time in the future, as long as you do not renounce your Canadian citizenship. The way the world is going right now (especially if your going to the USA), I would HIGHLY suggest that you hang onto that Canadian citizenship, you will probably need it in the very near future :)
