Question:

As captain what am I supposed to do? ?

was voted captain of my volleyball team last week. I believe the reason I was voted in is because I'm supportive of everyone, I encourage, I try to bring humor to every hard situation, and I have good leadership skills.

Today my coach asked to speak to me alone. She then lectured me and the co-captain on how we aren't being harsh enough with the other players. She told us that we needed to stop acting like mistakes weren't a big deal and start pointing them out. (We usually tell girls it's ok to make mistakes and to try and fix it next time.)

She flat out told me that I need to stop trying to be everyone's best friend and be more strict. I'm not a mean person. It's just not my personality. How can I go about fulfilling my coaches orders without becoming a completely different person from who my teammates thought they voted for?

  1. I'm a junior varsity player on my high school volleyball team this year. to me personally a captain needs to show leadership on and off of the court, in and out of practice, and in or out of school. captains on my team encourage and try to pinpoint mistakes and help fix them. you DO need to be able to have fun on the court, but you have to be able to make everyone be serious when needed. you cant be laughing and goofing around all of the time because youll never win a game that way. you have to show all of your teamates that there is a time to have fun and a time to be serious. you can have fun and work hard at the same time, but like i said before there is always a time to be serious, to get into the game, and sacrifice your body for the ball. you cant make girls think that when they make a mistake that its ok and to shake it off and not do anything about it. you have to pinpoint the problem, tell them that they will get it next time, and to keep working on it and improve. you have to critisize and encourage at the same time. hope this helped! good luck this season!

  2. Constructive criticism..

If someone misses the ball because she didn't dive low enough, instead of yelling at her just say "It's okay, go lower next time!"

and congratulate people when they get a particularly hard save, so it evens out.

    good luck!

  3. i utterly and completely agree with ally plus give your team a lot of encouragment and become clost with your coach

  4. Captains (usually setters) just run warm up and stretching drills.

Our captains just pretty much make sure we have everything under control the day before and day of a game. The coaches really do everything.

Encourage people to do better, help them if they need it (one-on-one kinda stuff). Just tell people what they are doing wrong, and how to fix it with out being mean.

  5. I just got voted as captain too! My coach told me that I'm great at supporting my teammates and am a good example. The coach basically wants you to tell them what their doing wrong instead of just saying good job everytime. Say "good job but you need to work on...." yeah. Hope that helps a little.

  6. I am a captain this year too! encouraging your teammates is really good! A captain is pretty much like being a cheerleader for your team, while still playing. BUT you have to give constructive criticism. You have to help tour teammates improve

example someone makes a bad pass because they were standing straight up you could say something like trying to stay low when you pass. you will get it next time. If you just say stay low some girls wont take it well. Half of my team has trouble with authority figures so when I say something I have to always say something encouaging with it.

it is hard ti bakence simetimes your team will need you to be strict and other times you just need to have fun!!

    GOOD LUCK!! :)
