As controversies brew, David Ortiz reluctant to join Boston Red Sox – MLB News
The Boston Red Sox continue to be marred in controversy. The team could not even qualify for the American League Division Series after the Tampa Bay Rays won the Wild Card with 91 wins, leaving behind the Red Sox on 90 wins for third position.
The defeat not only dealt a serious blow to the aspirations of the Boston Red Sox to make it to the ALDS, but also caused deep fissures in the team prompting the unexpected departure of manager Terry Francona and general manager Theo Epstein.
As if that was not enough, David Ortiz, known as Big Papi is also reported to have made his mind to part ways with the Boston Red Sox. The veteran designated hitter is for now noncommittal to join the team.
Referring to the unceremonious departure of Francona and Epstein as an event that should not have occurred, David Ortiz stated there was much drama going on, forcing him to think if he wants to be part of it.
"There's too much drama, man," Ortiz said to ESPN's Colleen Dominguez. "There's too much drama. I have been thinking about a lot of things. I don't know if I want to be part of this drama for next year."
Despite the not-so-impressive, in fact more-than-inconclusive, end of the Boston Red Sox journey this year, Ortiz silenced his critics with characteristically aggressive performance throughout the regular season.
He held an impressive .309 ERA with 96 RBIs which included 29 homers, in the regular season. But his team could not make their way to the post-season games, terminating all hopes to see bigger games in the playoffs.
"We had that when we won the World Series in 2004," he said. "We had that when we won the World Series in 2007."
But this year, there is no beer, and there are no video games to play as the team lost the battle in the start, crumbling all hopes to witness any fleeting moments of glory. It will be interesting to see if the Red Sox offer Ortiz a new contract or allow
him to leave the club.
