  1. While Philips may have invented the DVD, others have perfected it.  Zenith is now part of LG, so they are essentially going to be the same quality.

Both are on the low end of the spectrum for quality.  They will work, but not the best.

I would go with Philips over Zenith if I absolutly had to choose between the two, but would go with Pioneer, Sony, or Samsung over those two.

I would also reccomend Blueray.  DVD is on its way out.

  2. Don't go by brand, look at the features and specifications of each product to decide which is better. Some useful features to look for are:

Component and HDMI connections for better picture

De-interlacing (aka DCDi by Faroudja labs), makes DVD's look better on HDTVs

Ability to play MP3, JPG and MPEG4 (DivX and XviD) files

Compatibility with DVD+-R and DVD+-RW, and DL (dual-layer) discs burnt by your friends

Check out "www.dvdhelp.com" for reviews of particular models.

  3. j-match, DVD is not on it's way out and will not be going anywhere for a long, long time. Blu-ray has not even reached 10% market penetration. It is simply too expensive for the average consumer.

I would not go with either brand. I would stick with a better known brand in home theater such as Onkyo, LG, Pioneer, Sony, Mitsubishi, Toshiba, or Oppo.
