i know this sounds kind if sad, and i don't think i can get an unbiased answer from anyone here that doesn't use drugs and alcohol, or has a real mental disease(depression is a state of being, not a disease get over it). i mean... if you can find a safe drug that has no chance to damage your body or brain should one indulge and try to level off?

i agree nothing good can come from too much of anything, but is escaping from reality a necessity if you have problems that are beyond your control, and beyond the guidance of a trained psychologist?

  1. I was there it sucks.

go to talk to someone. get a script for something and you'll feel better eventually.

  2. a lil weed isn't bad

  3. it really depends on your state of mind. if you understand for some of us depression is a state of mind then you understand that any drug can form into addiction. And your also understand that you have a recovery time after the use. My doctor put me on antidepressants. because circumstance in my life out of my control. They only problem is they made me more depressed, suicidal. I couldn't drink liquored because of the drugs. then i did some deep thinking i could take all the drugs and drink all i wanted to, to calm me down but until i changed my perception in life concerning my uncontrollable circumstances. It would make no difference how i dealt with them. i would never find the peace i desired. In short i now take herbal tonics for calming me, i drink occasionally when i am hanging out with friends. and i exercise for the time out from the things i can not change. In short i am the one that is responsible for me I will not drink at all and drive. I will not take medication just because a doctor or society says to without checking what they can do to me and for me. i will not put other peoples problems first for me to handel any longer. Your question should be,What can you do for you? that prescription drugs or recreational drugs can"t . Sound like you will be ok but don't come up with sad as excuses to use what you should not do. Be as true to yourself in the same form that you asked the question.

  4. Sadly, all drugs seem to alter the brain over the long-term.

Studies show that even pot users over a long period have, on average poorer long-term memories. Whether this is due to actual damage or not is debatable, but it seems like something is occurring. Google SSRIs and brain damage....decide for yourself.

Also, many recreational drugs were, not too long ago prescribed over the therapeutic couch. No long term studies have been done on psychiatric medication.

I've taken prescription drugs and they have pooped out over time. Also i feel 'altered'. Alcohol did a different kind of damage, since it messes with GABA receptors.

Anti-anxiety drugs, like Klonopin have withdrawal issues, some serious. Same with drugs like Paxil and Effexor.

Can't think of a single drug that does not mess with the brain in some way and at least some segment of the population report serious side effects or brain changes.

I think most recreational drugs cause more brain damage than prescription drugs.

    Google Breggin and medication.

Perhaps a very very low dose of a prescription drug is your answer.

  5. Throughout our lives and as we age we go through different stages of life...these times present unique circumstances and challenges.  Adapting to these are not easy, as we are still figuring out what we want, and who we are.  Escaping from reality by using substances will not change the circumstances, and numbing oneself with them will only dull your brain's receptors from receiving natural chemicals.  These can be obtained from loving relationships from others, exercising, accomplishing ones goals.  Take a long look at your reasons for using these and maybe you will decide whatever it is that you trying to avoid is not all that bad--the time you spend tripping may be better spent changing what you are trying to avoid.
