would i have to be driving for a year or more in britain to be able to drive straight away in spain?

You will need to search out the Spain driving laws to see if this is accepted.

That will depend entirely on the driving laws in Spain. You may be able to drive on your British license for a short period - maybe a month. But after that you may have to show proof of residency and get a Spanish license. Check the law in Spain.
