You will ONLY get ten points if you answer based off experience and/or gathered knowledge IN YOUR OWN WORDS, so don't copy and paste something off a website or cut and paste a link.

The fish I want to know more about is the marbled hatchetfish, and hatchetfish in general. AS MUCH INFO AS POSSIBLE (i.g. compatibility, important requirements, hardiness, preferable pH, food, longevity, ETC.)

Thank you!

  1. most people hav neva even heard of that fish. u should hav a chosen a fish a bit more well known dude

  2. Okay, I'm not going for the ten points here but...MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A LID!!! XD Did you know hatchet fish are the only fish that can actually sustain flight?

Ok, just some general care stuff: Water should be a LITTLE acidic, like 5-7 ph. Water temperature should be about room temp (75-80 F). Hardness can be pretty broad, I'd say like 4-12 degrees hardness. You can buy water test kits at the store or PetSmart will do it for free.

If you take care of them right, they will live for AT LEAST 2 years. Feed them a greater variety and maintain their tank and they will live longer. They'll eat tropical fish flakes as their main food, but you can also give them stuff like bloodworms, brine shrimp, etc. Oh yea, keep them in groups of 3 MINIMUM (more is better) because they're schooling/community fish. And you can keep them with pretty much any other tropical schooling fish that isn't aggressive. (Guppies, tetras, mollies, platies, etc.)

    Alrighty, good luck! 8D

  3. It is important to look for a good cover for the tank, as these fish are known for "flying"

  4. These fish are unique fish, the bodies remind me of a fish with babies up front of the bodies so neat. These fish will jump out of ant tank if lids are not tight since they like to eat from the top. They also need and love live plants for the oxygen they require for survival. The fish you place with them must be gentle as well. The hardness is normal and tempters are around 70-75 the ph is around 6.7 and this depends on the owners  how they treat there tanks plus what they feed my son had some and he fed his bugs flake foods and some other stuff from a pet store. My son had 2 angle fish and 10 of these hatchet fish and a few guppies as well can't tell if he still has all the fish or not. He may of added more by now.

  5. Or you could just google it and quit posting silly contest questions because you're bored.

  6. compatable with any fish small enough not to be viewed as a snack

their swimming preference even helps them skirt predation with certain fish that may take a nibble (medium cichlids, etc) but also with more agressive community types (rams, gouramis, angels, barbs, etc)

TIGHT FITTING LID, these guys are champion jumpers and capable of true (powered) flight, IME one flew for about 25 across a room

medium soft to medium hard water accepted (aren't too picky) but seem to do better in softer acidic water, few peices of driftwood, peat moss, or blackwater extract in the water is sufficient

    food: ANYTHING SMALL ENOUGH

    bloodworms

    small pellets

    flakes

    brine shrimp

    tubifex

    blackworms

    daphnia

all in frozen, fresh killed, live, or freeze-dried forms

    longevity?

generally somewhere between 5-8 years depending on care

keep the points.. i have lots

not even like you can buy stuff with them
