As of May 27, 2008, who is the greatest golfer of all time?

Records aside, as I have nothing but the utmost repsect for Jack, but I still say Tiger. There is NO doubt in my mind Tiger will break Jack's record, but he will grab the bar & set it much higher. He may win 25 majors before he's done...he's just now hitting his prime. I am of the same opinion too that Tiger plays in an era now, where the talent of the other guys is much much higher on the whole. Jack is still the man though until Tiger wins #19.....because remember 18 is just a tie.

I'm 29.  In my opinion Jack is the greatest because of his longevity.  Jack has 24 years between his first major and last major win.  But Tiger is ever so close, because the competition these days is much more talented ON AVERAGE than it was in Jack's time.   There are just so many good players these days with relatively few weaknesses.  I'd say there are 500 guys on earth that could put 4 rounds together and beat Tiger if they were playing good.  In Jack's day there were not as many elite players as today, but it boggles my mind to think of Jack winning majors for 24 years.

Jack Nicklaus.

Until Woods catches or beats the Golden Bear's record then for me it's still Jack. He played and won on courses that are not manicured within an inch of their lives, played in all weathers (why do Pros now seem to go off every time it rains) and still is a superb ambassador for the game.

For me Woods, brilliant though he is, still has a little catching up to do.

I would like to say jack like the other contributors but what they have failed to consider is it is not how many tournies or majors you win that determines this. Tiger is the best because he will eventually break Jack's record and he has done tremendously well in a time where golfers are playing much better than during jack's time. The popularity of the game has made fitness and practice much more extensive than in previous decades. I want to emphasize I'm not jumping on any bandwagon, I simply realize times have changed and golfers are much better than they were before, not solely because of equipment but from more adherence to training to and scientific developments in better understanding aspects of the game. Tiger practiced unlike anyway i have ever seen and he had the god given talent to go with it. He is the best the game may ever see

Unless someone proves differently, Jack Nicklaus has to be considered the best golfer of all times.He has won more major tournaments, was the dominant player for the number of years he played,  and finished 2nd the most times in the major events.

Jack Nicklaus.

He has the all time record for Professional Major victories.  He also has an astonishing amount of 2nd place finishes in Majors (I think that it is 18).  Basically, during his prime (mid 60's to early 80's) he finished 1st or 2nd in about 1 of every 2 or 3 Major Championships.

Jack Nicklaus... hands down.   Even though Tiger is on fire, he still has 5 majors to win before he ties Nicklaus' 18.  Even then, Nicklaus' 19 2nd place finishes is still tops, showing not only how many he won, but how close he was to winning more!

Tiger Woods has put golf to another level.  I was awed by Ben Hogan and Jack but Tiger has them beat..  The only dark horse would be a guy by the name of Moe Norman who died a couple of years ago.... Even Tiger was amazed by this man. I am 56 years old.
