As prescribed by table etiquette, what is the proper placing for a dinner napkin when leaving the table?

Placed on the table or the chair? I'm thinking the table, since if placed on the chair, the napkin can't be reused.

  1. Place it on the table, folded, on the right side of the plate.

    If it is a paper napkin, you may ball it up and place it on the plate.


  2. If you need to leave the table, place your napkin on your chair, folded loosely (NEVER wadded). Only after the meal is over should you place your napkin on the table to the left side of your plate (NEVER on your plate!).
