As students, do my fiancee and I lose our medical insurance once we are married?

My fiancee and I are both full time students in college and we got engaged last week. I am graduating in Spring of 09 and then going on to grad school for 2 yrs and he will be graduating in Spring of 2010. I am 21 and he is 20. We are both covered under our parents health insurance since we are considered "dependents." If we decide to get married while still in school, do we lose this health insurance under our parents? I would love to get married next summer but some have said we should wait till he graduates and gets a job and get married in summer of 2010. I am just confused about the status of our insurance if we decide to get married next summer. We live in New Jersey, if that makes a difference.

  1. typicaly you would need to get your own coverage once married. talk to your councler about affordable plans for students but be aware that insuance is expensive

  2. Yes, you will both lose your insurance because after you get married, you will no longer be considered dependents under your parents. Sorry.

  3. I would like to suggest you get as much information as you could before taking action, here is a good place for that.http://health-insurance.onlinebestoffer....

  4. Once you are married, you certainly aren't their dependents any more.

  5. Yes.  You will both lose health insurance coverage if you get married.

99.99999999999% of health insurance policies would no longer consider an adult child a "dependent" if he or she gets married.

This is something you'll have to take into consideration - if you're ready to get married, then you should be ready to provide for yourselves.  (financially, insurance, etc)  If you can't do that, then you should delay getting married.

Unfortunately, some people assume that just because you're in love, you can make a marriage work.  But a successful marriage takes much more than just love.  No harm in waiting until you're both ready for everything that goes along with marriage.  :)
