  1. You will still be able to buy regular DVDs, that play on a standard DVD player.  HD-DVDs are likely going to disappear in the same fashion that the old Beta videocassettes did.  The biggest manufacturer of HD DVD players bowed out of the competition, so I would expect Blu-Ray to make a huge surge in the coming months.

Blu-Ray and HD-DVD cannot be played on a regular DVD player.  Blu-Ray players play Blu-Ray and HD-DVDs play on HD-DVD players.

There are a few manufacturers that have Blu-Ray/HD-DVD players, but they are few and far between.

    Hope this helps.

  2. HD-DVD is dead.  The remaining studios have already made announcements that they will be moving to blu-ray.  There will be no new releases on HD-DVD.  Pretty much anything that's been released and shipped NOW will be IT.

In the next few months, expect stores to drop prices on remaining HD-DVD inventory to get rid of it.

Neither HD-DVDs or blu-ray discs will play on a regular DVD player.  You also can't play a HD-DVD on a blu-ray player or a blu-ray disc on a HD-DVD player.  You CAN, however, play regular DVDs on either a blu-ray OR hd-dvd player.
