As we entered the 21st century, the Human Genome Project, a massive collaborative effort by scientists all over the world reached the first stage of completion; we now have the complete sequence of human DNA. What is the value of this information?

  1. It allows us to get our genome looked at, and check if we have a predisposition to certain conditions. This may not be preventable in the long term, but it can alter the way we live.

    For example, high blood pressure can be countered by a low sodium diet. Lung cancer can be delayed or prevented by not smoking. With our genome knowledge, we will have even more of a reason to watch how we live, and adapt accordingly.

    Also, certain other conditions could be discovered, like allergies. This could mean a life/death difference, because not everybody knows what they have to avoid to prevent anaphylactic shock.
