Asafa Powell and Veronica Campbell Brown secure podium finishes at the Jamaican Championships
As the second day of the Jamaican Championships concluded, the event observed the display of some tremendous performances from the 28-year-old Jamaican sprinter, Asafa Powell and Veronica Campbell-Brown, the 29-year-old Track and Field sprinter.
Powell, the 100m run specialist, held the world record for the distance between June 2005 and May 2008 with a clocked time of 9.77 seconds and 9.74 seconds, respectively. Powell is usually known as a consistent 10-second barrier breaker and boasts of a Personal
best of 9.72 seconds, which regards him as the fourth fastest man in the history of the discipline.
After a competition in November 2010, it has been acknowledged that Powell has broken the ten-second barrier more times (66 times) than any other runner in the history of the sport.
Veronica, on the other hand, is a formidable performer who has had the privilege of bagging five Olympic gold medals. She is also the reigning Olympic champion for the 200m run. While running at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, she accomplished the 200m distance
in 21.74 seconds, which was the fastest time by a woman runner in a decade’s period.
After this performance of hers, she became the second woman in the history of the sport to have bagged titles in two consecutive Olympic events for the distance of 200m. Before her, it was German sprinter, Barbel Wockel, who bagged four Olympic gold medals
during her professional career and held the record for two consecutive prestigious titles.
Veronica is known as the second fastest Jamaican over the distance of 60-metres, while she is the fourth fastest for 100m and the third fastest runner over the distance of 200m.
Prior to this event, Powell had been considered as an underdog for fitness issues he faced last month, which culminated in him pulling out of the Rabat World Challenge, however, at the Kingston’s National Stadium, his impeccable performance observed an emphatic
finish of 10.08 seconds. The runner-up and world junior bronze medallist, Yohan Blake, finished second for hitting the finishing line in 10.09 seconds. The third place on the podium was claimed by this season’s fastest Jamaican, Steve Millings, who stopped
the clock in 10.10 seconds.
While sharing his excitement over winning the contest, a happy looking Powell said, “The race should have been a lot easier, but I got a bad start, and I had to run towards the end, I managed to get to the front and I won and I am happy. When I came out
of my drive phase I saw myself pulling them in so I was not concerned with the bad start.”
In the women’s event, Veronica bagged the title rather easily for clocking 10.84 seconds. The formidable runner went on to claim the field right from the beginning and was matchless in her performance. Kerron Stewart, the runner-up, stopped the clock in
10.97 seconds.
