Asafa Powell forced to withdraw due to injury
Asafa Powell, of Jamaican origin, is a twenty eight year old sprinter whose forte is the hundred meters race arena. Although he competed in both the Athens Olympics held in 2004 and the Beijing Olympics held in 2008, he was unable to materialize his preparations into the reception of a medal.
Although he finished fifth in both the Olympics events in the hundred meters race, he did achieve a gold medal at the Beijing Olympics as a member of the Jamaican four hundred meters relay race, in addition to setting a record.
The Commonwealth Games have also proven to be exceptionally successful for him, as he achieved two gold medals and one silver medal. Recently the 2009 World Championships provided him with another reason to celebrate, as he received a bronze medal at the hundred meters, as well as a shiny gold medal as member of the relay team.
The IAAF World Athletics Final remains to date the most distinguished event in Asafa Powell’s athletic career. He has won a magnanimous number of five times at the Championships, thus testifying in all entirety to his athletic wisdom, aptness, physical strength as well as the importance he holds as an asset to the athletics squad of the Jamaica.
He also holds a record at the event, further emphasizing his strength as an athlete. With a personal best of 9.72 seconds in the hundred meters, a feat he accomplished in 2008 in Switzerland, Asafa Powell is undoubtedly a pleasure to watch.
It therefore arrived as a huge means of disappointment and grief that Asafa Powell will not be able to compete in the upcoming DN Galan Samsung Diamond League, which is to take place on this Friday.
Powell had been all set to compete against his biggest rivals, Tyson g*y and Usain Bolt, in the arena of the hundred meters. However, Doyle Management Group, the firm that acts as the representative of this Jamaican sprinter released a statement that Powell had suffered a minor groin injury in last month’s leg of the Samsung Diamond League. This, combined with additional setbacks, forced him to withdraw from the event to be held this Friday.
Although the groin injury healed over the days, a back and hamstring problem commenced. These developed as a barrier to training, and Asafa Powell was unable to train for a whole ten days after the race in Paris. Although, according to Powell, the pain has sufficiently disappeared and he has resumed training, he is not able to achieve his maximum potential. In a statement released by the Jamaican athlete, he said he was clearly disappointed. He said he had foreseen the race as a chance to win, but his fitness level has not entirely reached the level where he can see himself emerging victorious.
It is clearly disappointing to discover that Powell was forced to withdraw from a race showcasing an encounter with his two major competitors. While it is definitely amazing to watch this enthusiastic athlete perform, currently it is more pertinent for him to maintain his fitness level. One hopes Asafa Powell is easily able to return to his top form and amaze us with even greater performances.
