Asamoah Gyan a target for Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson

Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson is believed to have an interest in securing a deal with Rennes striker Asamoah Gyan, who enhanced his reputation during a successful World Cup campaign for Ghana.

Gyan made his debut for Ghana in 2003, in which he claimed his first international goal and set the record of being the youngest player ever to score for Ghana.

He also set another record in the 2006 World Cup, scoring the fastest goal in the competition [68 seconds] which was also Ghana’s first ever World Cup finals goal.

Gyan may have missed a crucial penalty for his side in the quarter-final clash against Uruguay this year, but has managed to make the shortlist of 10 players up for the Golden Ball award.

The 24-year-old was purchased for £6m by Rennes two years ago, and is now valued at £20m, a price which may prove to be a problem as Liverpool are short of cash.

A position which may change with the departure of Fernando Torres.

It is believed that Hodgson has already dismissed the reported £30m offer from Chelsea and has pumped Torres’ price tag to a whopping £100m, a figure which would make him the world’s most expensive player.

If Torres does decide to leave this summer, then according to Hodgson’s contingency plan you should expect Gyan to be representing the Reds under number 9 next season.

Sunderland have also been reported to be in the frame of securing a deal.
