Can taking both medications once be harmful?

  1. There is a theoretical interaction in which the aspirin (Asaphen) decreases the blood pressure lowering effect of ramipril (Altace).

    The mechanism is that aspirin prevents the body from producing some prostaglandins, which causes its anti-inflammatory effect, but also affects dilation of blood vessels in the kidneys, which is the primary mechanism by which ramipril lowers blood pressure.

    That being said, these medications are often used together in patients with heart failure, diabetes, and a history of heart attack, all of which have proven benefits from each of these medications.  At normal doses, they should not have a dangerous interaction, but you should let your doctor know if your blood pressure gets out of control.
