Question:

Asbestos Siding Disposal?

by  |  earlier

0 LIKES UnLike

I am getting ready to remove all of the old siding off my house to reside. It is covered in old slate siding, which is believed to contain asbestos until i get my lab results back.

I am under the understanding that i can remove the stuff myself as the homeowner without taking drastic measures like a contractor would have to, for example tenting the whole house! I am just nervous about getting a dumpster to dispose of it cause of the possibility of asbestos.

Any good advise or experience??

  1. sorry, but check with your local building inspection/office.  If you suspect asbestos and its confirmed from the test, you have to have it removed professionally.  Any other way is illegal.  As you remove the shingles, asbestos fibers become airborne causing you major health problems as well as people in the area.  This is not something you want to fool around with or put your family, yourself or your neighbors at risk for..../

  2. GET THE PROS TO DO THAT AND GET A PERMIT  IF U DONT UR GONNA GET SUED BIG TIME AND THE LEAST OF UR WORRIES.

  3. when you believe asbestos is involved you need to call in the pros because when you remove it, it becomes airborne and that's when it's dangerous. also, there are special disposal rules, you cannot just throw it away.

  4. Contract it out.  If you do it yourself, you will be contaminated with the dust, as well as contaminating everybody you come into contact with.

You also might find yourself sued for ages from the EPA, the garbage company and the landfill owner if you seriously throw your siding in a normal dumpster after getting it tested positive.  It isn't just a hazard - it's pretty much a guaranteed way to kill somebody.

  5. That would depend on your state rules. In my state that is highly illegal and is penalied with jail time and all sorts of fines....even if it is the homeowner.

Regardless, asbestos is spread through the dust that would come from grinding or breaking the siding up. As long as you wear gloves and a mask, and don't break the siding pieces, you should be fine....but I would absolutely check with your state to see if it is legal. I have a 1870 house with the siding....and it will sit for a while b/c DHEC says it is estimated to cost 10,000 to remove the siding....ugh!!

  6. You're just begging for mesothelioma. I would hire a professional to remove this for the safety of you and those around you. Do you have neighbors close by? Why risk their health?
