Aschwin Wildeboer clinches Men’s 100m back-stroke title:  2011 FINA World Cup, Berlin
Day one of the seven stop 2011 FINA World Cup series saw exciting swims in Berlin, Germany, on Saturday, October 22. The session of the meet conducted the Men’s 100m back-stroke and Women’s 100m butterfly final races.
Aschwin Wildeboer of Spain was up against his strongest rivals, China’s Feiyi Cheng and Great Britain’s Ryan Bennett in the 100m back-stroke final heat. Wildeboer started off in stunning fashion and touched the finishing wall in a record breaking time of
50.23 seconds to take over the Men’s 100m back-stroke title. Meanwhile, Cheng finished with silver medal by posting a time of 51.74 seconds and Bennett settled for bronze title by hitting the finishing wall in a mark of 52.21 seconds.
Radoslaw Kawecki of Poland claimed fourth position by powering the finishing wall in a mark of 52.40 seconds, while Jacob Pebley of United States of America settled for fifth position in a time of 52.60 seconds. Stefan Herbst of Colombia picked sixth spot
by posting a time of 52.82 seconds, while Gerhard Zandberg of South Africa finished seventh by submitting a time of 52.96 seconds. The eighth place went to Colombia’s JanPhilip Glania with a blot of 53.40 seconds.
On the other hand, the Women’s 100m butterfly crown was taken over by Sweden’s veteran and Olympic medallist, Therese Alshammar with a winning mark of 55.62 seconds. Meanwhile, Francesca Halsall of Great Britain posted an impressive time of 56.98 seconds
to win silver title and Jeanette Ottesen of Denmark settled for bronze title in a time of 57.30 seconds.
United States’ young athlete, Allison Schmitt, put up a great performance in the respective race and finished fourth spot by touching the finishing wall in a mark of 58.29 seconds. In the meantime, Maria Ugolkova of Russia earned fifth position by hitting
the finishing wall in a mark of 58.76 seconds and Otylia Jedrzejczak of Poland settled for sixth place by posting a time of 59.04 seconds.
Belgian athlete, Kimberly Buys finished her distance to secure seventh spot as she touched the finishing wall in a time of 59.27 seconds. Alexandra Wenk of Colombia claimed eighth position in the respective meet by submitting a time of 59.32 seconds.
Aschwin Wildeboer and Therese Alshammar took a huge ovation from Berlin’s crowd due to their versatile swims and they were awarded gold titles after the session’s completion. The next round of the 2011 FINA World Cup series is scheduled to take place in
Singapore, from November 4-5.
