Ashes 2010-11: Australia captain Ricky Ponting's injury could rule him out of series
The one dark moment in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746’s glorious day at the WACA today was when captain Ricky Ponting sustained an injury on the field.
The injury occurred when England’s Jonathan Trott edged the ball and Ponting, who was at first slip, attempted to catch it. The ball hit Ponting’s little finger and ricocheted to wicketkeeper Brad Haddin. It was out, but Ponting
did not wholeheartedly join in the celebrations, clearly hurting. He left the field shortly thereafter to have the finger looked at.
Teammate Peter Siddle said that Ponting “seemed alright but the extent of the injury will be known only when he returns from the hospital.”
If Ponting’s finger is broken, it may well rule him out of the rest of the Ashes series. But the captain himself has been reported to say he is determined to play on regardless of the diagnosis.
Michael http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Clarke-c51120 led the Australian team after Ponting left the field today, and will continue to do so if Ponting – who has not missed a Test match due to injury since 2004-05 – does not recover before the Boxing Day Test at the
Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Despite his injury, Ponting will likely be over the moon about his team’s performance on day three at Perth. After being thrashed 1-0 in the Ashes so far and lampooned in the media for their shockingly dismal performance, Australia
have finally made an inspired comeback in the series, leading in the third Test by 310 runs and having brought England to their knees at 81 for five.
