Ashes 2010: Australian ‘Big Ben stunt’ could lead to law suit
In the build up for Ashes, a prank saw pictures of the Australian captain and vice captain, Ricky Ponting and Michael http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Clarke-c51120 respectively on the Big Ben. Even though, the England captain has taken this prank lightly and said that it serves to make the series
more competitive however authorities in England have been fuming over the projection that has seemingly challenged their authority. The Westminster city council have shown their concern over what they have called ‘guerrilla advertising’ which they say could
encourage others to hamper the build up to the London Olympics in 2012.
The image posted on the Big Ben read, “don’t forget to pack the urn”, which showed their mischievous intentions right before the England team’s departure for Australia since the hosts aim to reclaim the Ashes, following a loss in 2009. Sky Sports had pulled
off a similar stunt in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Monty-Panesar-c2024 on the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
This particular stunt however could end up in a law suit as the Westminster deputy leader, councillor Robert Davis seemed to be angered at this mischievous prank. He said that the Palace of Westminster is considered a part of Unesco world heritage site,
and that it was inappropriate and insulting to find the building misused and abused in this particular manner.
He stated, “It’s also a criminal offence. If an organisation wishes to display advertising on it, or any other building in Westminster for that matter, they should apply through the normal channels like any right minded person with respect for the law. Although,
we’ve not prosecuted previously as such stunts are usually over quickly, we do feel now that enough is enough and we’re considering legal action.”
He added that they would have to take some serious measures against such advertisings since they would not want these campaigns to increase during the London Olympics.
