Ashes 2010: Organizers of presentation ceremony forget Alastair Cooks medal
The closing ceremony held at the Sydney Cricket Ground hosted by a commentator of Channel Nine lasted just a few minutes compared to the lavish celebrations afforded to the players of Australia when they celebrated an Ashes win some four years ago. The presentation
at the SCG was a break from the tradition of the usual end of series closing ceremony. The players of the English side were not announced individually to receive the awards and the commentator Mark http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Taylor-c92915 simply had a small talk with the captain of the England
side, Andrew Strauss before the Poms lifted the urn.
Self induced amnesia on the part of the commentator from channel nine also meant that he forgot to announce the man of the series, Compton Miller award for Alastair Cook even though Miller’s son was present there on the podium to give the award. This left
a rather bad taste in the mouth and Cook was later given his medal on the outfield from Miller along with Michael Atherton.
The Ashes tradition also dictates that the losing captain presents the urn to the winning captain however that was not the case in this instance where Michael Vaughan presented the urn to Andrew Strauss. It is interesting to note that when Australia wrapped
up the Ashes series 5-0 some four years ago the presentation ceremony was a lavish and extravagant affair. In that ceremony individual tributes were given to the players who were retiring from the game. These included Shane Warne, Justin Langer and Paul McGrath.
However the organizers barely even mentioned the retirement of the player Paul Collingwood. Some of the former English cricketers were irked at the brevity of the post match ceremony, with Andrew Flintoff writing on his Twitter account, "Thought the presentation
was awful: forgot Cooky's medal, no champagne, no individual medals, the boys deserved better than that! Disgraceful! Last time there were speeches, they introduced all the players, fanfares for the retired boys, champagne, gloating. That was all over in five
minutes.”
What many found most unusual was how Channel nine cut their broadcast short from the Sydney Cricket Ground midway through the celebrations of the England Cricket team to show a repeat of a TV show. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 have faced their worst ever Ashes defeat against
the Englishmen and this series win will definitely help England improve their ICC Test rankings.
