Ashes Update: Fast-bowlers Doug Bollinger and Ryan Harris recalled to strengthen the Test squad
Australian captain Ricky Ponting has indicated to Australia’s first hand bowlers that none of them are confirmed for the next Ashes Test at Adelaide. The Australian bowlers were not able to get more than one wicket as a whole in
the second innings of the first Test at Gabba, which was an alarming sign for Cricket Australia. Keeping in view the situation, Ponting has called for Doug Bollinger and Ryan Harris to be included in the 13-man squad for the next Test at Adelaide; the two
will most probably replace two out of Ben Hilfenhaus, Mitchell Johnson and Xavier Doherty as the trio was not able to put an impact on their opponent’s batting line-up.
Johnson went wicket-less for the first time in his Test career and it was the most disappointing moment for him. He has never been dropped from the Test team, but at the moment he is considered to be the most vulnerable man in
the bowling squad as Ponting said that Johnson was not at his best - and as two other fast bowlers have been included in the squad, no one’s place is safe in the team for the next Test at Adelaide on Dec. 3rd. Johnson was put on notice when the
17-man squad was already selected for Brisbane after he took five wickets and a century for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Western-Australia-c865 but he totally failed to deliver with the ball where he was needed most. A bowler of Johnson’s calibre gets better with more time he spends in the
field but in last inning Johnson delivered 42 overs and conceded 170 runs and he also struggled with his speed and accuracy at times.
Ponting, however, did not single out any bowler for Australia’s rather poor run of form in the second innings; rather, according to him, none of the bowlers were able to give a satisfactory performance. He said that it is team
work that delivers whether with bowling or with batting but the needed group work in bowling was quite missing and the team has to work a lot on many aspects before they go for the Adelaide Test. Even Peter Siddle, who was the most successful in the first
innings with his 6 wicket haul and a hat-trick on his birthday, was not able to come up to expectations and went wicket-less in the second innings at Gabba. The only sign of hope was showed by Marcus North, who stumped off Andrew Strauss.
Ryan Harris and Doug Bollinger will be expected to bring back hope in the squad in the second Test at Adelaide, which is also a flat pitch, and if the Australian bowlers fail to deliver again, let’s just say it will only get worse
for Cricket Australia. Harris and Bollinger were also selected for the first Test in the inflated squad but then they were let go. Harris proved to the selectors that he can be durable with his four wickets in a One-Dayer for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Queensland-c834 and also having secured
six more wickets in a fixture of Sheffield Shield while playing against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 in the beginning of this year.
Doug Bollinger has been away from bowling practice after having a stomach strain in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 and because of this, selectors called Peter Siddle to replace Bollinger in the first Test but this decision was regarded controversial until
Siddle hit the English batting squad by getting six wickets with a hat-trick on the opening day. Now let’s see whether Bollinger and Harris are given a green card for the second Test or not and if selected, how much they deliver in these hard times which the
Australian team is facing currently.
