Ashleigh Barty downs Victoria Duval to advance into the semis of the Girls’ Singles – Wimbledon 2011
Twelfth seeded Australian Ashleigh Barty dumped sixteenth seeded American Victoria Duval with a 6-3, 6-2 win at Girls’ Singles – Wimbledon Championships 2011, a major grass court tournament held in London, United Kingdom. She easily
reeled off straight sets victory to breeze into the last four on Friday.
The Aussie took fifty-eight minutes to triumph over Duval at All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. She quickly earned this straight set victory to book a semi-final spot at this Grand Slam event.
15-year-old Australian made a shaky start at Court Six as she lost her serve in the very first game. She was trailing 0-2 when she re-focused to win the next three games in a row before Duval could hold on again. Barty then unleashed
second wave of groundstrokes to bag next three games and eventually clinched the opener with a 6-3 score line. Although she produced a lower first serve share of 54 percent as opposed to American’s 66 percent, however, Barty registered an impressive 73 percent
win on it.
The higher seed kept momentum rolling into the second set and held her opening serve to level the scores at 1-1. After the American held her serve in the third game, Barty went berserk and unleashed flurry of groundstrokes to reel
off next five games in a row. As a result she sealed the set with a 6-2 victory in just twenty-four minutes. The Aussie clobbered a slightly higher first serve share but earned a spectacular 80 percent win on it. In addition to this, she faced zero breakpoint
and converted both breakpoint opportunities to her advantage to help win comfortably.
En route to quarters, Barty displayed tremendous skills to overpower British wild card enterer Lucy Brown, German qualifier Katharina Lehnert and American Madison Keys convincingly to reach this spot.
Up next for the higher ranked Australian is the winner of the match between seventh seeded Russian Yulia Putintseva and Dutch Indy De Vroome.
Third seeded Russian Irina Khromacheva will be joining Barty in the last four. She downed fifth seeded Canadian Eugenie Bouchard in straight sets to reach this spot.
