Ashleigh Barty earns a wildcard for Wimbledon after winning the warm-up at Nottingham – Tennis News
Aussie teenager, Ashleigh Barty, who is just 16-year-old, will make yet another appearance in the Grand Slam tournament in Wimbledon as a wildcard entrant.
She has already earned the title of becoming the youngest ever player in the history of the sport to have played in the Grand Slam tournament. She accomplished that milestone in this year’s first Grand Slam championship, the Australian
Open, contested in Melbourne, Australia. She was 15-year-old at that time and won the wildcard playoffs to book a spot in the main round of the Australian Open.
Barty has been awarded the wildcard for the Wimbledon Championship main round spot after her majestic triumph in the Nottingham over the weekend. She clinched the title by ousting the fellow finalist, Tatjana Malek, in straight
sets 6-1, 6-1. However, it was a bit harsh on the 149th ranked German, Malek, as he was forced to play her semi-final and final clash on the same day due to shake of schedule of the tournament.
The teenager from Australia has already earned a sport in the qualifying rounds of All England Club after her monumental triumph in the last year Wimbledon juniors’ tournament. She won the title and clearly sent a strong message
to her potential rivals that she is not going to be an easy piece of cake for anyone especially for the qualifiers because she looks invincible in the qualifying stages although struggles to perform against the top ranked players of the world.
Barty also contested in the Roland Garros French Open having received a wildcard for that as well but lost in the opening round of the tournament. However, for players of her age it is mammoth achievement to participate in such
an elite tournament. It will be her third direct appearance in the Grand Slam tournaments this year and a possible first round upset can further grow her morale. All Australians have their eyes on this young Queenslander. She carries a lot of hopes with her.
There is a mighty possibility that she doubles the treat with her upsets at Wimbledon along with Aussie number one, Samantha Stosur, for the home fans.
