Ashleigh Barty is Casey Dellacqua’s replacement for Hopman Cup – Tennis News
World number 175, Ashleigh Barty, will represent Australia in place of Casey Dellacqua at the Hyundai Hopman Cup, which will take place in Perth from December 29 to 31.
Dellacqua was selected to partner Australia’s second best player at the moment, Bernard Tomic, at the mixed event but she announced her withdrawal due to a foot injury on Monday.
That has provided a chance to the 16-year-old, Barty, to play against some of the top players in the world. The Australian teenager will get a chance to play with former world number ones, Ana Ivanovic and Venus Williams. Another
former top-10 player, Andrea Petkovic of Germany, will be also taking part in this three-day event.
Talking to media people on Tuesday, Barty said, "I'm really looking forward to playing the Hyundai Hopman Cup. It will be an incredible experience to compete against some of the world's best players and will be an amazing start
to the summer for me."
Barty played five professional events this year but could not clear the first round at any of them. However, she gained valuable experience by facing her older rivals at these tournaments.
The Australian youngster started the season by taking part in the Brisbane International, where she was beaten by the top seed, Vania King, in the opening match. She went down at the hands of Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Anna Tatishvili
at the Moorilla Hobart International and the Australian Open respectively.
Barty added, "I've learnt so much this year and I think my game has matured a lot. I've played more professional events this year and Hopman Cup is going to be a real opportunity to play against the top players. I can't wait."
Steve Ayles, who is the tournament director of Hopman Cup, "We are delighted Ash has confirmed for Hyundai Hopman Cup. She's one of the most promising girls in her age group."
Barty also failed to clear the first round at the French Open and Wimbledon Championships but she did a great job on the ITF circuit, winning four titles. Now, she will be aiming to make her mark at the Hyundai Hopman Cup.
