Ashleigh Simon falters in the last round of South African Women’s Open
Ashleigh Simon finished the South African Women’s Open in the sixth position. She shot a final cumulative score of 218.
When the tournament began, Simon was one of the favorites. Many fans were rooting for the South African player, who demonstrated great potential during the tournament. The first round was average with Simon scoring 72 points, 3 more than the round leader,
Germany’s Caroline Masson.
This performance was overlooked by all as Simon prepared for the second round. Many observers were hoping that after her first round, Simon will find her rhythm and will shoot up the leaderboard.
Simon did not disappoint anyone. She shot another 72 points that landed her in a tie for the first position with three other players.
Her game was very good in the second round and raised the hopes of the fans and experts alike.
At the end of the second round, Simon was at the top of the competition, along with Danielle Montgomery, Joanna Klatten and Caroline Masson. This was very exciting for the South African golf fans as now there was a chance that a South African player will
come first and defend the title.
All hopes were lost at the end of the third round. Simon fumbled through the third round, despite her confident finish in the second round. She shot a depressing 74. She slid back to tie for the sixth position.
Fans are dumbstruck by the game of Ashleigh Simon. Her see-saw performance astonished everyone, particularly after the second round.
What appeared to be a top slot ending at the end of the second round, turned into a below average sixth position game in the third round.
Experts say that the course and the wind conditions probably played their part in bringing down Simon’s position on the leaderboard. The last round saw heavy winds that made playing conditions worse. The course is not an easy play area even in normal conditions.
Whatever the reasons, the fans left the golf course very disappointed. What was anticipated to be a South African win on South Africa’s soil turned into something else entirely. Lee-Anne Pace., another South African star managed to grab the second position.
