Ashleigh Simon going strong in the Ladies British Open
The second round of the Ladies British Open ended with a surprise for everyone. The South African player Ashleigh Simon topped the rankings with a total score of 135 points.
She was standing at 69 points at the end of the first round. When the second round started, she was not one of the favourite players. All eyes were focused on the English players who had dominated the first round.
Simon started the second round on an average note. On the first two holes, she made pars and came to the third hole where she scored her first birdie.
This was nothing remarkable and the observers dismissed the birdie, thinking that she will surely sink a bogey on the coming holes.
She came to the fifth hole, where it all happened. From this hole until the end of the front nine, Simon was all birdies. She scored a birdie on holes, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9.
This was her best performance of the day. The back nine was a rather dull game when compared to this magnificent string of birdies.
However, she started the back nine on a great note. She bagged an eagle on the 10th hole, which caused everyone to think that Simon is ready to repeat the performance of the front nine.
She shot a bogey on the 11th hole and this broke the spell. Another bogey followed on hole 12. It now appeared that Simon had run out of steam and the best part of her round was past her. She scored a birdie on the 14th hole and things started to look up for her.
This was the end for Simon and she played an average game hole 14 onwards. She scored pars on the next three holes and just when everyone thought that she would finish the round at par, she dropped a bogey on the very last hole.
Ashleigh Simon has been the surprise player of the tournament. She kicked off with a very mundane start with a score of 69 at the end of the first round. Now, as the third round begins, everyone will have their eyes on her.
