Ashleigh Whisenant wins at the Gadsden Area Girls High School Golf Tournament for the third time
With a flurry of birdies and just two bogeys, Etowah’s Ashleigh Whisenant won the Gadsden Area Girls High School Golf Tournament on Monday at the Twin Bridges Golf Club for the third straight year. Whisenant finished off with a 3-under, 69 and though she
was temporarily taken aback by a bogey on the third hole, she quickly bounced back with three birdies on her last five holes to lift the cup. She almost equaled her tournament best round of 68 a year ago.
“The wind was pretty rough all day long,” said Whisenant, who will be attending the University of Memphis to play golf in the fall. “The course was playing a lot tougher than it was last year. It wasn't an easy day at all.”
This was whisenant’s second win for the season after winning the Grissom High School Invitational last month and she is all set to head straight into the Scottsboro Invitational on Friday.
“I hope I can just keep up the good play and then on to state,” a smiling Whisenant said.
Meanwhile Glencoe, the 2010 team champion, won the title with its four seasoned golfers, Amber Watkins, Whitney Gray, Jordyn Clowdus and Hope Bishop, finishing for an aggregate of 268. Gray carded an 85 to lead the team while Clowdus finished with a 91 and
Bishop for a 92.
Westbrook Christian was the runner-up with a total of 284. Southside settled for third place with a total of 353 with Reilly McGowan at 99, Sarah Williams at 123 and Bailey Wise at 131.
Glencoe team coach Wes Weems was more than happy with his team’s performance, winning the title in a row.
“Our performance was very consistent, it’s basically what I've been looking for all season. We haven't been able to get into the rhythm of the season,” Weems said. “I'm feeling good about it.”
The tournament, sponsored by Gadsden Junior Golf Association, was started earlier due to heavy rain forecast later in the day, and was scheduled to start at 1 pm. The tournament was followed by a prize distribution ceremony later in the evening.
