Ashley Cole believes Chelsea can win the English Premier League and Champions League double
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ashley-Cole-c6809 revealed he felt the Blues could go on to win the English Premier League crown and the coveted UEFA Champions League in the upcoming season.
The appointment of 33-year-old former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Porto-c39186 boss Andre Villas-Boas shows Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is willing to take risks to claim the European Cup.
The London side had a particularly disappointing campaign last season, which saw them finish second to Manchester United on the English Premier League table.
They successfully managed to qualify for the Champions League but that does not make up for the lack of silverware.
However, the 30-year-old left-back was confident his side could go on to win the Champions League, the one trophy they have not been able to claim as yet.
According to the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604 were not unbeatable and he said he would not mind meeting them in the European competition.
The La Liga giants defeated Manchester United 3-1 to claim the European crown and while they were the better side, Cole said they were not invincible.
Cole said in an interview:
“I don't think we're becoming detached from United, and Barca are beatable.
I went to the Champions League final and thought United could win.
The way Barca played was unbelievable, like a machine, and you can see why people think they're unbeatable.”
Cole mentioned the semi-final clash against Barcelona in 2009, a highly controversial clash in which the Blues were denied three rightful penalty claims.
The former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 player said he felt Barcelona had luck on their side, which is why they went through to the final.
Cole said:
“We should have beaten them in the semis two years ago when we had three penalties turned down.
Last season, the Blues entered the title-race towards the end of the season and a victory at Old Trafford with just two games would have seen them on level points with Manchester United.
Unfortunately, Chelsea lost against the Red Devils and the point difference was increased to six points and the Blues finished second.
Cole insisted he believed Chelsea could have gone on to successfully defend the Premier League title, a trophy he personally valued more than the Champions League, if they had been able to defeat Manchester United.
Cole continued:
“I still believe if we'd won at Old Trafford a couple of weeks before the end of last season, we would have won the league.
Personally, I'd rather win the league every year than the Champions League.”
