Ashley Delaney wins Men’s 200m backstroke gold – EnergyAustralia SC Championships
Ashley Delaney of Nunawading won gold medal of the Men’s 200m backstroke on final day of the 2012 EnergyAustralia Short Course Championships at Challenge Stadium in Perth on Sunday, September 16.
The 26-year-old Delaney stifled hopes of his opponents in the distant backstroke discipline and snared gold medal of the event. Delaney, who qualified as the fifth best finisher, elevated his efforts in the playoff and occupied the title of the race.
Delaney experienced strong resistance from his following swimmer but emerged on the finishing end for gold medal of the event by submitting a time of 1 minute and 51.75 seconds.
The champion was followed by Travis Mahoney of Nunawading, who remained 0.19 seconds slower from his foregoing finisher and transpired on the finishing end as second position holder by reporting a time of 1 minute and 51.94 seconds.
Mahoney was traced by Ben Edmonds of Unattached, SA, who remained 0.27 seconds apart and finished third in the event by reporting a time of 1 minute and 52.21 seconds.
Fourth fastest spot of the race was obtained by Jared Goldthorpe of Bayside, NSW, who remained 3.06 seconds behind and settled on the wall with a timing of 1 minute and 55.27 seconds.
Goldthorpe was traced by Joshua Beaver of Tigersharks, VIC, who suffered a loss of nearly half body length and surfaced on the wall with an effort of 1 minute and 55.72 seconds.
Subsequently, Beaver was trailed by Braiden Camm of Chandler, QLD, who remained almost 0.70 seconds behind and completed his race in a time of 1 minute and 56.46 seconds.
Camm was trailed by Matson Lawson of Tigersharks, VIC, who stayed 0.21 seconds behind and made his way to the finishing blockade as seventh best finisher with an effort of 1 minute and 56.67 seconds.
Eighth best spot of the race was obtained by Jamie Sturgeon of Nudgee Brothers, who remained 2.25 seconds apart and sprinted his way towards the wall with a timing of 1 minute and 58.92 seconds.
In addition, Delaney received massive appreciation from the audience and collected medal for his gruelling efforts after the event.
