Ashley Vander Tuig named as Player of the Year – Volleyball news
The senior middle blocker (MB) of the Central Valley Christian High school, Ashley Vander Tuig, has been recently recognised as the Player of the Year.
She has been a part of the Cavaliers for last three years and has always fought for the team in front row. She helped her team to attain enormous success throughout the previous season and played a great role in leading Cavaliers to their third straight
Central Section Division IV championship.
She is the second player from Central Valley Christian High school to be named the Bee’s Player of the Year, joining her coach Meghan Warkentin. Vander Tuig had a tough competition with her teammate Danielle Nederend, Bullard's Pookie Gonzalez, Clovis West's
Lauren Meador and Clovis East's Madeline Kuber for ‘Player of the Year’ award.
However, her team coach Warkentin totally supported her for this position. The coach complimented her by saying that she is one of the best players in the team, who has the ability to do well in every aspect of the game.
Vander Tuig spent the 2011 season with Cavaliers and totalled 359 kills. She recorded a sky-high .429 hitting percentage and also contributed 327 digs. She was simply amazing in all aspects of the game. In addition to her attacks and digging, she added 112
blocks and 32 aces in the season.
In her three years with team, she settled for many honours every now and then. She started as a sophomore with simple expectations and helped the Cavaliers to achieve 31-4 record in her first year. She kept on improving in the coming year and enjoyed great
limelight. Overall, she is credited with 736 kills, 459 digs and 261 blocks in three-year career.
The victory against Clovis West High School was the best performance of Vander in the year 2011. She added 22 kills with a hitting percentage of .538, which was terrific.
Speaking of her position in the team, Vander Tuig said. “I've always been in the middle because I'm tall, but I love being in the back row. So in the off-season, I worked hard so I could have that opportunity. It's a whole different view of the game. I almost
like it better that’s what starts every play. You have to have good back-row play to do anything else.”
