Ashley Young, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Valencia-c40863 – How will Sir Alex change his formation at Manchester United? – Part 2
Against Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League final at Wembley, Sir Alex Ferguson fielded an offensive looking Manchester United side which was loosely based on a 4-4-1-1 formation. Javier Hernandez started as the Red Devils’
only http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Real-c30728 striker whilst Rooney occupied the secondary striker’s position as he was tasked with helping out United in the midfield region. In midfield, Sir Alex played a narrow four setup. Park Ji Sung drifted inside from his left wing position whilst Ryan
Giggs and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Michael-c25261 Carrick played as the two main central midfielders.
Luis http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Antonio-Valencia-c6345 played on the right as an out and out winger when United had the ball at their feet and as a narrow winger when United were without the possession of the ball. In theory this was to create a 4v3 situation
in the centre of the park against the likes of Xavi, Iniesta and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Sergio-c33030 sitting back and protecting his two central defenders, the
Spanish midfielder allowed http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Daniel-c9879 Alves and Eric Abidal to push forwards from the wings.
This created a 4v4 situation and 4v5 when Busquets joined in on the midfield activity. In the end, United’s midfield proved to be as thin as paper it was written on in the end as http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604 won their 4th European Cup
by beating the Red Devils by three goals to one. In the aftermath of their defeat at Wembley, it was highlighted that Ferguson’s team lacked two main qualities in the centre of the park. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ryan-Giggs-c31985’ lack of mobility in the central midfield meant that United
never really had the creative spark that they needed.
In http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Michael-Carrick-c25282’s elegant midfield work, United lacked the drive and the thrust provided by a more robust midfielder. In the summer transfer window, Ferguson outlined that he was going to go shopping for two to three players
at the maximum. One would hope that the Scotsman has changed his mind given that http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Paul-Scholes-c29394 has taken an expected retirement from football altogether.
In all honesty, Manchester United now really do need a defensive midfielder and an offensive midfielder but it seems that Ferguson is set to operate with what he has got as he has already bought Phil Jones from Blackburn http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rovers-c40385
and Ashley Young from Aston Villa. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/David-c10409 De Gea’s arrival seems to be imminent from Atletico Madrid. By usual maths that makes it three for the summer for United and the summer transfer window has not even entered into the month of July as of yet.
This means that Ferguson will most probably use http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Phil-Jones-c29903 will be used as a defensive midfielder for Manchester United in European football. In
the next part of this article we will take a look at the different formations that Sir http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Alex-c4752 might employ at United next season in order to bring European glory to Old Trafford for the third time in his tenure at Manchester United.
